If you work for the government’s offshore oil and gas regulator, we’d like to hear from you.
On July 22, POGO will testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on the restructuring of the Department of the Interior’s Mineral Management Service (now renamed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement, or BOEMRE).
POGO has been asked to provide background on the history of MMS’s regulatory failures, mismanagement, and other problems so that the Committee can understand where these issues have been coming from and how best to fix them.
We are looking for input from MMS/BOEMRE safety inspectors, auditors, and others within the organization about the following:
- Problems that the reorganization needs to address—particularly the problems that won’t be addressed by the current reform proposals
- Recommendations to address those problems
- Any background information or other additional information we should be aware of
We’re also interested in whether the Department of the Interior’s reforms are trickling down to the regional offices and the field in general. What real changes are happening?
Please email Mandy Smithberger with any information. If you feel uncomfortable emailing us, please leave a comment on this post, or fill out our Report Corruption Form (remember, for your safety and anonymity, do not use a government computer or account to send us emails or fill out this form).
And keep an eye on this post—if you do leave a comment, it’s likely we’ll have some follow-up questions to make sure that we accurately represent the views within the agency. All information provided to POGO will remain strictly anonymous unless the giver of the information desires otherwise.
Thank you for your assistance in our efforts to make oil and gas regulation more fair, open, and accountable!
