Last week, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a final judgment in the government's False Claims Act lawsuit against Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), a San Diego-based scientific, engineering and technical services company.
POGO blogged about this case in August after the jury found SAIC liable for False Claims Act violations and breach of contract with regard to two contracts with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the 1990s. The jury awarded the government $1.97 million in damages, which are tripled to $5.9 million under the False Claims Act. Last week, the judge upheld the jury's award and tacked on an additional $577,500 in civil penalties (the government had asked for $770,000) plus the government's expenses in bringing the lawsuit.
SAIC is the 9th largest federal contractor in POGO's newly-updated Federal Contractor Misconduct Database. SAIC only has eight other instances of misconduct since 1995, but three of them are False Claims Act cases.
