3. Cancel the plutonium "money pits" at Los Alamos
Although the U.S. is committed to reducing its nuclear weapons stockpile under the New START treaty with Russia, the Department of Energy is planning to build a new nuclear facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Nuclear Facility would be a new home for plutonium research and would free up space at another LANL facility for the increased production of plutonium “pits,” the triggers at the core of nuclear weapons. The project's estimated construction budget has ballooned by at least 10 times in as many years, making these nuclear parts a real money pit.
