This is ridiculous. In a Freedom of Information Act request by the watchdog group Judicial Watch, the FBI has redacted information on bin Laden to protect his privacy rights!
According to the House Government Reform Committee's Citizens Guide to Using FOIA, "since only a clearly unwarranted invasion of privacy is a basis for withholding, there is a perceptible tilt in favor of disclosure in the exemption." FOIA allows agency discretion in balancing privacy with the public's right to know. Clearly, one can imagine many reasons warranting an invasion of bin Laden's "privacy." If the government needs to keep information under wraps for legitimate law enforcement or national security reasons, then the FBI can invoke those particular FOIA exemptions. However, Judicial Watch argues that it is easy to determine that it is bin Laden's name that is redacted given the news articles cited throughout the documents obtained through FOIA.
